Cat Gecko (Aeluroscalabotes
felinus)
Aeluroscalabotes felinus comes from tropical rain forests of southern
Malaysia, Thailand, Kalimantan Island, and Sanana Island from the Sula
Archipelago. It is semi-arboreal and nocturnal. The Cat Gecko is
by far the coolest gecko we have ever worked with.
A pair can be kept in a 20 gallon terrarium. We use a layer of
coconut fiber bedding with a layer of moss over it. Live plants such a
Pothos are planted throughout the terrarium and vines are placed in a
manner that provides more climbing space for the geckos.
Temperatures should be in the mid 70's.
We mist once at night half hour after the lights are out. This method
holds the humidity through the night when Cat Gecko's are active. The
broad Pothos leaves must also contain water droplets for the Cat gecko's
to drink. It is very important to maintain high humidity levels when
keeping Aeluroscalabotes felinus.
Aeluroscalabotes felinus is strictly nocturnal and requires some sort
of a hiding place in the daytime for which we use small hollowed out
pieces of bark. A sleeping box containing moist coconut fiber bedding
and moss can also be used.
We feed our Cat Geckos crickets with we allow to roam free in the
terrarium. And on occasion wax worms. If letting the crickets roam free
make sure that there is always a nutritious food item available for the
crickets to stay gut loaded. Crickets should be dusted with Miner-All
one a week.
The movement of the Cat gecko is very unique, it is slow and
deliberate. When hunting they stalk their prey slowly curving their
bodies in a very cat like manner. Cat geckos have a strong prehensile
tail which they can use to hang from branches.
We find them to be a low maintenance gecko who's very unique
characteristics will provide great enjoyment.
